Theater 21 is a theatrical ensemble whose actors are primarily individuals with Down syndrome and autism. Over its 18 years of activity, it has created dozens of performances presented in theaters and institutions throughout Poland. The group has performed at national festivals (including Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk, Kraków) and international festivals (Prague, Berlin, Helsinki, Freiburg). In 2019, the play “The Revolution That Wasn’t” was awarded at the International Theater Festival “Divine Comedy” in Kraków. In addition to artistic activities, Theater 21 is also involved in education, theater pedagogy, publishing, organizes conferences, lectures, and works in international networks. In 2021, Theater 21 was awarded the POLITYKA Passport in the “Theater” category.
Currently, Theater 21 is creating the Center of Inclusive Art project, which is the first social cultural institution in Warsaw dedicated entirely to the creativity of artists with disabilities. Its main task is to include diverse social groups in the fields of art, culture, and science. Events held here include meetings with artists, workshops for families and seniors, lectures on disability studies and art by people with disabilities, exhibitions of visual artists, and much more. The space itself and all events are adapted to the needs of people with various disabilities. The Center of Inclusive Art is the permanent seat of Theater 21.
The program of the Center of Inclusive Art is co-financed by the City of Warsaw.
